Splits

From Merry Graverobbers guild info

As a guild, we run a single split for the first few weeks and expect all raiding members to have one split character.

Splits FAQ

Wtf is a split? - as the name suggests, we split the raid, in our case, in half. We mix half mains, half alts, with the mains getting all of the gear which drops, then we do it again, with the characters reversed. So we end up with twice as much gear on the mains (at the cost of none on the alts for that week). We can effectively spend a bit more time doing two runs and get twice the gear for our mains.

So I don't get gear on my alt? - not on week 1 or 2 at least, beyond what the mains don't need. Don't linger too much on this thought, I don't think almost anyone does raid content on alts in the very early weeks. And the mains will pay the alts back later in the tier, because they already have much more of the gear they need.

This sounds like a lot of effort - yes, but really only for officers. We'll figure out which characters join which raid and deal with loot, which are the time consuming bits.

What if the raid is really hard? - looking at tiers like Sepulcher which had a massive wall at heroic Anduin, this actually still works fine even if we can't do the whole thing as a split. We can split the first x bosses, then merge the mains for the harder stuff (and immediately reap the benefits).

What content might we do as a split? - impossible to say until NA launches and we see difficulty, but we won't bang our heads against the wall for the sake of splitting an extra boss. From previous tiers, all of normal is splittable and often all but the last couple of bosses in heroic, but ultimately, as much heroic as makes sense - which might be up to the last boss or might be much less.

Is this worth our time? - absolutely yes, it’s simply the best way to spend our time to gear our characters. It gives us a huge leg up in gearing, which gives a burst of early progress because we aren’t so vulnerable to gear checks – which gives more mythic vault slots and snowballs. We have done splits for several tiers now, and they have always paid off.

What do I need to do?

Have an alt geared and ready to go for the new raid. At the moment (TWW season 2), we’re asking that split alts be at least 635 item level.

Your alt will need to be the same role as you – if you’re usually a DPS player, you’ll need a DPS alt. If you’re usually a healer, you’ll need a healer alt. This is to keep things simple. Your alt doesn’t need to be the same class, as long as they can fulfil the role and you can play the character to a high standard. You are welcome to mirror if you aren’t confident on another class, or if it's just easier for you. There generally isn’t a problem swapping between ranged and melee for the purpose of splits, but you may want to check with officers to make sure the split characters aren’t too melee heavy.

Otherwise, simply turn up to the raid on the correct character – officers will let you know which raid to bring your main, and which raid to bring your alt to.

Remember, per our raid Schedule we always add an extra raid day for the first two weeks of a tier - this is partly to accommodate splits.
